First week of school activities!

Looking back on our first few weeks, the students sure had a lot of fun! We practiced working together as a new team to see what we could accomplish. We also got to know each other, doing things like our mill around activity, where students had to find a classmate who had run a 10k, had a pet rat, or didn't own a cell phone, for example.

We also had students think about what Grit means, and decide on a class definition. We shared the dictionary definition, and then tried to think about words we wanted to use to describe ourselves as a team. What traits do GRIT members display? Who are we as a team? Students transferred these ideas to GRIT posters:

Garden Observations

Observation Skills
Yesterday we took advantage of the nice weather to work on our observation skills in the CHMS garden.  Small details like insects were observed by students when they spent time in one place closely examining their surroundings.

We had a great first week.  Above is a puzzle that was created by students who colored their piece before putting the puzzle together.  They also included a descriptive word about themselves.   The puzzle reveals a wide range of traits that our students bring to this fantastic team.

Welcome Back!

Hi, GRIT families! 

We are excited to start a new year with this amazing group of students that we met back in June. We have been working on plans for the year and have some fun trips planned.

Key dates for our team in September:
  • Thursday, September 8th at 6:30 - Parent Information Night
    This evening is for parents only and is an opportunity to meet the teachers and learn about Team GRIT
  • September 22-23  Camping Trip
    We will be going to Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge and then camping overnight at Grand Isle State Park.   We need chaperones for this trip, so please check your schedules and see if you can join us for all or part of this opportunity.
Enjoy the final days of summer vacation and we look forward to seeing all the new Grit students on Wednesday.

Civil War Reenactment Field Trip

Last week we headed to Shelburne for the Champlain Valley Historical Reenactors' Civil War Camp. Students were able to talk to people dressed in period clothing, and learn about what life was like in camps. 
Women were not often in camp, but here is a woman showing them the kinds of foods eaten and how they would be prepared. Hardtack, anyone?

This is the chaplain's tent. His role was to help keep the soldiers' moral compasses pointing North. He talked to us about his writing desk, shaving equipment, and daily duties. 



This woman shared with us what it was like for women who were soldiers in the war. Many enlisted with their husbands, though of course they were not supposed to be there. They were found out if they were killed or injured, as medical attention was needed. Often, it was known what was going on, as one letter wrote, "Sergeant gave birth today." 

Here is an image of the same woman: dressed in her civilian clothes and dressed as a soldier. Some went on to live the rest of their lives as men, as then they could claim their military benefits.

After a morning in the sun, we made it back to the future to finish our afternoon at school. 















Lowell Mills Field Trip Photos

Back in April, we went to visit the mills in Lowell, MA. Students got up extra early for a long bus ride down and a long bus ride back. Luckily, we had great weather and everyone did a great job at the museum!
Our bus dropped us off in what is now a park, but what used to be all boarding houses like the ones above.

Inside there are examples of old looms and lots of classroom spaces to learn about mill life. There can be several schools visiting in one day. 

Inside the looming workshop, students learn about looms and how the looms in the mills were different from those on the farm. The looms the students used were for individual use, not the large industrial looms of the mills. 

Our instructor demonstrates how to weave in a simple pattern, before showing students how to create all the different patterns, as shown on the wall in the photo below. Students were able to create a 'sampler' of different weaving styles.


This map shows were the slave states were in 1880. The invention of the cotton gin increased cotton production and the South's demand for slavery.

Students learned how the amount of people working on the mill floors changed as technology changed the equipment. As technology advanced, less workers were needed.

Even with only a few looms going, you can tell how loud it would have been to work on the floor.

Inside, there are explanations about equipment, models, actual equipment, and many primary sources detailing what life was like. 


This is a model of a cross section of the mill, showing where the different operations took place. Some people were weaving, some carding, some spooling thread.

We also learned about the state of clothing manufacturing today, including investigating where our own clothing was made. The map below is highlighting where our clothing tags came from. 


Then we went into the boarding houses, where we saw what typical meals were like...

...and typical bedrooms. This one slept 4!

Finally, we went to the gift show to watch a short film on Lowell before perusing the shop items and then heading home.
